Tuba Tuner
This tuba tuner listens for the low register, so it can read notes down to pedal tones. Tuba reads concert pitch, so the letter matches your music. Hold each note for a moment and watch the needle.
Play a tuning note
The microphone is only used while the tuner runs. Sound is analysed on your device and never recorded or sent anywhere.
Tuba tuning notes
The tuba reads at concert pitch, so the tuner shows the same note you play. These are the usual tuning notes, with the pitch the tuner listens for at A = 440 Hz.
| Concert pitch | Frequency |
|---|---|
| B♭2 | 116.54 Hz |
| F2 | 87.31 Hz |
Not sure of a fingering? The tuba fingering chart shows every note and plays it at the right pitch.
How to tune a tuba
- Warm up with long tones; a cold tuba plays flat.
- Play open B♭ (B♭2) with a big, relaxed sound and hold it.
- Move the main tuning slide. Needle left (flat): push in. Needle right (sharp): pull out.
- Check open F (F2). If B♭ and F disagree, steady your air and embouchure before moving the slide again.
Low notes and the 4th valve
The low register is where tubas drift most. Valve combinations add tubing that is slightly short, so 1 + 3 and 1 + 2 + 3 notes come out sharp. On a 4-valve tuba, use the 4th valve: 4 for low C and F, and 2 + 4 for low B and E. Tune the 4th valve slide on low F (4) against open F an octave above.
Getting a clean reading
Play a little louder than you would for a soft passage and avoid a big swell at the start. Room noise and other players confuse any tuner, so tune in a quiet spot or close to the device’s microphone.
Tuba Tuner FAQ
What note does a tuba tune to?
When the band tunes to concert B♭, tubas play open B♭, usually B♭2 (in the bass clef staff) or the low B♭1. Open F (F2) is a good second check.
Why is the tuner slow to read my tuba?
Low notes vibrate slowly: low B♭ is about 58 vibrations a second, so the tuner needs a moment to measure it. Start the note cleanly, hold it steady, and the needle settles in a second or two.
How do I tune a tuba?
Warm up, play open B♭, then move the main tuning slide. Push in if the needle is left (flat), pull out if it is right (sharp). The main slide is usually the largest slide on the instrument.
Why are my low C and low F sharp?
On a 3-valve tuba, 1 + 3 is naturally sharp. A 4-valve tuba replaces it with the 4th valve, which is much better in tune. On 3 valves, open the sound and lip the note down.
