About Finger Chart

Last updated October 4, 2026

Finger Chart is an independent site of free, interactive fingering charts for band instruments. It is built for students who need the fingering for one note right now, for parents helping with practice, and for band directors who want a chart they can trust and print.

Every chart works on a phone, plays each note so you know what it should sound like, and has a free printable PDF. There are no accounts and no app to install. The site is paid for by advertising, which never appears inside or above the interactive tool.

How we verify fingerings

A wrong fingering is worse than no chart, so every note goes through the same process:

  1. Standard conventions first. Fingerings are written from the standard, widely published fingering conventions for each instrument: the valve combinations for each partial on brass, the seven slide positions on trombone, and the Boehm-system key work on clarinet.
  2. Checked against the physics. For brass we check that every fingering matches the harmonic series of that valve combination or slide position. For clarinet we check that clarion fingerings match their chalumeau fingering plus the register key.
  3. Anything uncertain is flagged. If a fingering varies between instruments or sources, such as clarinet altissimo or low-extension keys on bass clarinet, it is marked Being checked on the page until a player of that instrument has reviewed it.
  4. Reviewed by players. Flagged notes go to experienced players of that instrument for review. The marker comes off only after that review.
  5. Original diagrams. Every diagram, chart image and PDF on this site is drawn from scratch. We do not copy or trace anyone else's charts.

The date at the bottom of each chart shows when it was last updated.

Report a wrong fingering

If something on a chart looks wrong, please tell us. Email [email protected] with the instrument, the note, and what you think it should be. Corrections from teachers and players are the fastest way to make the charts better, and we read every message.
