Sousaphone Tuner

This sousaphone tuner listens for low brass notes and shows whether you are flat or sharp. Sousaphones read concert pitch, so the letter on the tuner matches your part for both BB♭ and E♭ sousaphones.

Play a tuning note

The microphone is only used while the tuner runs. Sound is analysed on your device and never recorded or sent anywhere.

Sousaphone tuning notes

The sousaphone reads at concert pitch, so the tuner shows the same note you play. These are the usual tuning notes, with the pitch the tuner listens for at A = 440 Hz.

How to tune a sousaphone

  1. Warm up with a few long tones; outdoors, warm up for longer.
  2. Play open B♭ with a full sound and hold it.
  3. Adjust the gooseneck or main slide. Flat (needle left): push in. Sharp (needle right): pull out. Tighten the gooseneck screw after moving it so it doesn’t slip while you march.
  4. Check open F (F2) and adjust again only if both notes read the same way.

Tuning for marching band

Sousaphones spend a lot of time outside, where temperature changes the pitch. A cold horn plays flat, so tune after you have been playing for a few minutes, and check again before a performance. Tune standing up with the horn on your shoulder, since posture changes how you blow.

Low notes on the tuner

Low notes vibrate slowly, so give the tuner a second to read them. If the letter jumps around, play a little louder and keep the note steady, and point the device’s microphone toward the bell rather than at your face.

Sousaphone Tuner FAQ

How do you tune a sousaphone?

On many sousaphones you tune at the gooseneck: loosen the screw, slide the curved mouthpipe in (sharper) or out (flatter), and tighten it again. If your sousaphone has a main tuning slide, use that instead.

What note should a sousaphone tune to?

Concert B♭. On a BB♭ sousaphone that is open B♭ (B♭2). On an E♭ sousaphone B♭2 is also open, so the tuning note is the same.

Can I tune outside before marching?

Yes, but tune again once you have played for a few minutes. Cold air makes brass flat, and the pitch rises as the instrument warms up from your breath.

Does the tuner work for E♭ sousaphone?

Yes. Both BB♭ and E♭ sousaphones read concert pitch, so the tuner shows the note you read either way. Only the fingerings are different.
