Euphonium Tuner
This euphonium tuner shows the note you are playing and whether it is flat or sharp. It reads in concert pitch for bass clef players, or in treble clef B♭ if you read treble clef parts, so the letter always matches your music.
Play a tuning note
The microphone is only used while the tuner runs. Sound is analysed on your device and never recorded or sent anywhere.
Euphonium tuning notes
The euphonium reads at concert pitch, so the tuner shows the same note you play. These are the usual tuning notes, with the pitch the tuner listens for at A = 440 Hz.
| Concert pitch | Frequency |
|---|---|
| B♭3 | 233.08 Hz |
| F3 | 174.61 Hz |
Not sure of a fingering? The euphonium fingering chart shows every note and plays it at the right pitch.
How to tune a euphonium
- Warm up for a few minutes; a cold euphonium plays flat.
- Play open B♭ (B♭3) with a full, centred sound.
- Move the main tuning slide. Needle left (flat): push in. Needle right (sharp): pull out.
- Check open F (F3). If one is sharp and the other flat, work on a steady, open sound before moving the slide again.
Valve slides and the 4th valve
Each valve has its own small slide. If notes using one valve are always flat or sharp, adjust that slide a little. The low register is where 3- and 4-valve euphoniums differ most: the 4th valve replaces the sharp 1 + 3 and 1 + 2 + 3 combinations and keeps low C, B, F and E in tune.
Bass clef or treble clef
Euphonium music comes in two forms. Bass clef parts are at concert pitch. Treble clef parts (common in brass bands and for players who started on trumpet) are written a ninth higher, like a B♭ trumpet an octave down. Pick the matching setting and the tuner’s letters will line up with your part.
Euphonium Tuner FAQ
What note does a euphonium tune to?
Concert B♭ (B♭3, open) is the usual band tuning note, with concert F (F3, open) as a second check. Treble clef players read that B♭ as written C.
How do I tune a euphonium?
Play open B♭ after warming up and move the main tuning slide: push in if the needle is left (flat), pull out if it is right (sharp).
I read treble clef. Which setting should I use?
Choose Treble clef in the menu. The tuner then shows notes a ninth higher, the way treble clef euphonium parts are written, so written C sounds concert B♭.
Why are my low notes sharp?
Valve combinations such as 1 + 3 and 1 + 2 + 3 are naturally sharp. On a 4-valve euphonium, use the 4th valve instead (4 for 1 + 3, 2 + 4 for 1 + 2 + 3). Compensating euphoniums correct much of this automatically.
