Baritone Tuner

This baritone tuner shows the note you are playing and whether it is flat or sharp. Choose bass clef for concert pitch, or treble clef if you read B♭ treble clef parts, including marching baritone.

A4 = 440

Play a tuning note

The microphone is only used while the tuner runs. Sound is analysed on your device and never recorded or sent anywhere.

Baritone tuning notes

The baritone reads at concert pitch, so the tuner shows the same note you play. These are the usual tuning notes, with the pitch the tuner listens for at A = 440 Hz.

B♭3233.08 Hz
F3174.61 Hz

Not sure of a fingering? The baritone fingering chart shows every note and plays it at the right pitch.

How to tune a baritone

  1. Warm up first; the pitch rises as the instrument warms.
  2. Play open B♭ with a relaxed, full sound.
  3. Move the main tuning slide: in if flat, out if sharp.
  4. Check open F below it. If both read the same way, move the slide; if not, steady your sound first.

Notes to watch

On a 3-valve baritone, 1 + 3 (low C and F) and 1 + 2 + 3 (low B and E) are sharp. Relax your embouchure and aim the air down, or extend the third-valve slide if you can reach it. The middle-register D (open) often sits slightly flat.

Marching baritone

Marching baritones point forward like a big trumpet and read treble clef. The tuning slide is usually in front of the valves. Tune standing in your marching position, because holding the horn differently changes how you blow.

Baritone Tuner FAQ

What note does a baritone tune to?

Concert B♭ (open B♭3) is the usual tuning note. Bass clef players read it as B♭; treble clef players read it as C.

How do I tune a baritone horn?

After warming up, play open B♭ and move the main tuning slide. Push it in if the needle points left (flat) and pull it out if it points right (sharp).

Is a baritone tuner different from a euphonium tuner?

The notes are the same: both are pitched in B♭ and read the same parts. The baritone has a smaller bore and brighter sound, and usually three valves, so its low 1 + 3 notes need more lipping down.

Which setting do I use for marching baritone?

Marching baritone parts are almost always in treble clef. Choose Treble clef in the menu so written C reads as C.
